WANTED: Personal Trainer – Tips for Picking the Right One

Considering Personal Training or never thought about it?

Never lifted weights or lifting but cannot get to your goals?

Would love to add muscle to your body and reap the benefits like increased metabolism, lose inches and change your body composition, reverse the aging process?

Want to start a fitness program or compliment your existing program?

Here are a few tips for picking a GREAT Personal Trainer;

1)      Get a referral or ask for references

2)      If you have an opportunity, watch them training someone else

3)      Are they focused on their client or are they distracted?

4)      Does the client look engaged?

5)      Meet with the Trainer before you ever sign a contract with the gym

6)      Do they seem passionate about what they do?

7)      Do you feel comfortable with them?

8)      Go armed with questions and be sure you are satisfied with the answers given

9)      What is their background and experience level?

10)   Are they in good shape?

11)   Listen to their recommendations and determine if you feel they can help you reach your fitness and wellness goals

12)   If you have any concerns once you sign up, be sure to let the Trainer know.   It is your time and money and they are working for you

My Personal Training Experience

Just like any profession; Hair Stylists, Nail Technicians and Hair Removal Clinics to name a few, there are good and not so good service providers.  Personal Trainers can get a bad rap because of a few that fall into the ‘not so good’ category.

A few years ago I decided to secure the services of a personal trainer.  Having no idea what I wanted or what my goals were, it was not well thought out on my part.  Luckily, I was assigned to a Trainer who was passionate, fun and very good at his job.

Like all tasks and projects I tackle, I went into this wanting to do the best I could.  I did everything my Trainer threw at me (sometimes under protest but that is another story).  I took this oh so seriously.  Again, I had no specific goal in mind except to get in shape.  I did not even have a weight loss goal because I had long accepted the extra 10 – 15 pounds I ‘owned’ for most of my life.  I ‘thought’ I was o.k. with it.  My Trainer was very good at developing creative programs that challenged me and worked every muscle in my body…oh how I remember those days!

It did not take long for me to start seeing my body change.  It was a metamorphosis like nothing I could have imagined.   As I progressed, I wanted more.  I started setting goals and revamping my eating habits.  For every goal I set, I had a Trainer who guided me and pushed me to get there.

A few months later, I no longer had the last 10 pounds; I had actually lost about 15 pounds and dropped about 4 or 5 pant sizes.   I lost the body fat and converted it to muscle and have never looked back!

So while I was extremely successful with my Personal Training experience, not everyone is as lucky and this is a serious mind, body and financial commitment that should not be taken lightly.

I recommend you go into the process with eyes wide open and goals firmly established to get the greatest benefit from the experience.
